The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
